Dan, congrats on the 18 months. Great!!
A sponsee does not need to be a challenge for you. More of an inspiration, I'd say. You can't keep him/her sober and you can't make them get the program. All you can do is offer you experience, strength and hope. Help them with the steps. In the midst of doing these things, you will most likely remain sober yourself. By giving all you have, you will receive many times more in the exchange.

I'm a crossword freak, so I have to give my opinion.

The thing about doing crosswords is that it takes some practice to get good at doing them. After you've been doing crosswords for a few months, they get easier (there are, after all, only so many four and five letter words out there). Even so, you can expect to have to use some outside reference material to solve a really good puzzle.

Josh is right that the NYTimes crosswords do get harder as the week goes on--Monday's the easiest, and Sunday's like climbing Everest. And yes, the NYTimes' puzzles are more difficult that most (although I would say The Boston Globe has the most difficult Sunday puzzles). You may want to start with a few Associated Press puzzles. Think of it like training for a marathon--start small, work your way up.

Dan, isn't there something about crossword puzzles getting harder as the week goes on? As in, they give you the easier ones at the beginning and they get progressively nastier as the week goes on? So if that's the case, you probably did an admirable job workin' the crossword puzzle. And I hear, legendarily, that the NYT puzzles are both the most challenging and most rewarding (because they're the hardest).

Eighteen months is a big deal. Seriously. Rock on and enjoy this perfect Friday.

You deserve it. :)
