Gopher State Roundup Recap

Gopher State was a lot of fun. I had a hard time getting going during the day. I think I was hesitant to get there too early because last year I was on time and the lines for registration were outta control. I didn't arrive there until around 6:30pm after working at the coffee house and going to the gym.

Upon arrival I ran into friends Andrew W and Isabella B within 2 minutes. We watched the 7:30 speaker together from the back of a packed banquet room. It was Peter M from Union, New Jersey. He definately had speaking skills - sounded very much like a TV Evangelist, actually. "The power of God, such and such." Now AA is a spiritual program, but not everybody chooses to call their higher power "God." I happen to refer to my higher power as "God," but not everybody does. I was a little put off by the fact that not everyone in the room might be able to relate with him. It was almost as if he was saying, "Turn your life over to God (in a Christian sense), or you won't be able to live sober."

Peter did have good things to say outside of the God realm, I just hope he didn't push anyone away as I noticed quite a few people leaving the room before he was done.

The 10:00pm speaker was Tammy F from Alabama. Now she was a speaker. It's not my place to tell her story, but I will say that nearly the entire hotel was in tears by the time she finished.

Life truly can be amazing. For the alcoholic, simple things can be unattainable - like having a relationship with family, holding down a job, paying bills - those types of things. She made me want to make a gratitude list for all of the things I am given, experience, have the opportunity to do, etc. Thank you, Tammy F.

Earlier in the day I was at Spyhouse for my weekend ritual of "Coffee and crosswords." A friend from the program called and said he was going to meet me here if I waited for him. I suspected he had been drinking by his speech.

Sure enough, he showed up a few minutes later, being dropped off by a cab. He stumbled over to my table, and instead of sitting across from me in the open seat, pushed my bag aside and fell into the booth alongside me. He was permeating booze. It was 11:00am on a Saturday morning.

I feel terribly bad for this guy. He's a guy that has tried to stay sober for years. He's gone to treatment three times. I think the longest he's managed to stay sober, though, is only 3 months. He's beyond the point of thinking that he can "drink like other people." He knows he's an alcoholic.

He began telling me about his night. I just looked at him and listened, letting him glamorize the previous evening's ongoings. After a few minutes he stopped talking and said, "you don't want to hear about last night?"

I told him no. I didn't want to be around him when he was drunk. I asked him if I could take him to detox, or treatment, or a meeting. He said, "No. Treatment is just an indoctrination to AA."

Then he asked me how I stayed sober. I told him he knew exactly how I stayed sober - I went to meetings, had a sponsor, read the big book, and did the steps.

"How come I can't do it, then?" he asked.

"You know exactly what you have to do to stay sober."

This is when I left. I packed up my bag and told him to call me if I could help him.

This guy is one of the folks who will not give AA a chance. He's been to a ton of meetings, but he will not partake in them. I relate it to going to the gym, but just using the tanning bed, and then wondering why you're not getting in any better shape.

I guess all I can do is pray for him.

Paris in the Spring

Paris Hilton

I just love Paris in the Spring. Paris Hilton, that is. Especially when she's chomping on a HUGE unhealthy fastfood concoction that she'd never eat without an enormous binging session shortly thereafter.

Okay, so seriously, where did this chick come from? She's completely famous - and for what? All for being a party girl. That's right. Apparently all you have to do these days is be seen at all the right nightclubs on the sunset strip.

Oh yeah, and be filthy rich. And have a secretly video-taped sex session released on the internet. And have an anorexic figure. And be blonde. And fuck all the right guys.

I'm not bitter or jealous - really, I'm not. I think all of the gigs she's gotten, publicity she's reveled in, and money she's been paid just to show up at places is all great! It's funny. Anna Nicole funny.

Gopher State Roundup

right-gopher.png

I'll be at the Gopher State Roundup later today, and perhaps tomorrow. I went last year after only a few months of sobriety. It was really an overwhelming experience. There are thousands of people there - all walks of life, all ages, races, etc, etc. I couldn't get over how many people were in recovery.

Great speakers, workshops, and fellowship. I'm really looking forward to it.

Please ignore the current mess of a situation in the Gallery. PHP sucks ass - and not in a good way. In the meantime, please entertain yourself with this site. If you're not in the biz, you'll think it's funny. If you're in the biz, you'll think it's sad but true.

Small Tidbits

Busy week, what with Jim's Birthday taking up all of my spare time to plan ;-) Just kidding. But really, it's been busy, so I've emailed myself little noteworthy items of interest I wanted to mention.

This chick was banned from walking during her high school graduation ceremony because she was pregnant! How absurd! She defied the school, arrived at the procession, and walked anyhow. Later she and her family were removed from the property. Good for her! Like child-bearing is a hush-hush thing these days - oi.

San Francisco has an online anonymous notification service. For those who find themselves inflicted with an STD, the site offers an anynonmous way to alert those you may have inflicted. I think it's a great idea. I hope the website gets used.

Super cool blogger, Ahding.com, has created a cheap gas finder that utilizes Google Maps. Good lord, I love Google.

Work shenanigans

Every year the agency celebrates the fishing season opener with it's own event - The Minnow Races!

Eight "Minnow Jockeys" are nominated to represent different areas of the agency. Employees are encouraged to don their fanciest hat in a Kentucky Derby-like show of support. Breaded and fried walleye is served with Minnesota staples like cole slaw and potatoe salad. It is a truly unique event. Unfortunately, during the 11th annual Minnow Race, weather forced us indoors - but fun was still had!

Pre-event bloody-mary's, served in nothing but the finest styrafoam!

Lunch is served! Fried walleye, with all of the tartar sauce you can muster. Served with your beverage of choice: Diet coke, Bud light, or Mumms. Centerpiece is a goldfish in a bowl, bobber placed on top, surrounded by the bait - gummy worms.

The races begin! On your mark. Ready. Set. Go!

Posturing is encouraged.

One of the finest hats that made it to the race.

A very fine hat!

Post-race - goldfish centerpieces destined to a lifetime of misery amidst advertising silliness.

Why I blog

Michael did such a beautiful job answering these questions in his recent post that I decided to give it a go. Of course, reading his blog you just know that he rattles this shit off the tip of his tounge. For me, I have to think about what I write. Like the needle-holding nursing assistant in that forever-funny episode of Will and Grace says, "I was like, 'This is haaard.'"

1) Why do you keep your weblog/blog/online writing thingie: for fun, for fame, for money, for popularity, or for another more obscur reason? What about the weblog gives you what you want?

I first starting writing about a year ago. My intent then was to explore myself, my sobriety, my inner-child, my what-have-you, through writing. I thought that perhaps a few people might stumble upon the site, and that was okay with me.

Then I discovered blogrolls, blog directory sites, and even other bloggers. My recent attempt at sobriety was suddenly filled with another obsession - blogging.

I now sometimes struggle with finding something to write about. I like to make quick small posts about humorous or news-worthy events happening in the world, but I also like to write something semi-meaningful, diary-like, or something that others may get something out of.

I've met people in person through the blogosphere. I've made friends online who I've never met, and probably never will. But it's given me another avenue in which to expand my life.

Now, I think I blog because I want to be able to look back on my life and see what was important to me back when ..., and see what my perspective was about what was going on in current events, and all that jazz. In many ways I'm still growing up, and like parents with a video camera locked on their little one, I want to see myself grow up.

2) Imagine that your weblog becomes wildly popular: your hit counter skyrockets, your comments are overflowing, and everyone is emailing you about everything you post. Name 3 positive things that could come of this, and 3 negative things.

3 positive things:

  • I'll have the validation (that I don't really need, but who doesn't like that?)

  • My google ads may actually be generating more than $0.07 a day

  • I will have met countless folks that will have undoubtably helped me grow

3 negative things:

  • My hosting bill will have skyrocketed

  • My inbox would presumably be overflowing with people needing my help each and every day. Sometimes a life of fame and celbrity isn't all it's cracked up to be!

  • The pressure to continue writing and continue growing readership may ultimatley hurt the content

3) What's the worst possible result you can imagine (short of being electrocuted or having your computer take over your brain, and who says it hasn't already?) from keeping a weblog?

Being fired. My mother finding it? Being stalked? Okay, so that might be kinda fun. I really can't imagine anything all that bad coming of this. I suppose I'm somewhat of an open book with this blog, so there's a possibility that somebody could take advantage of me, but I don't know how.

4) What do you do to prevent that worst possible result from happening?

I don't normally mention folks by the full name, nor do I mention where I work, or list my street address - those types of nuances.

5) List 5 reasons that would make you stop keeping your weblog for a period of 6months to a year.

  • Breaking both hands
  • Breaking both wrists
  • Breaking my back
  • Dying
  • Becoming very depressed

6) List 5 reasons that would make you stop forever.

  • Dying
  • Going 'back out'
  • If something (I can't imagine what) terrible happened as a result of my mainting this site
  • Somebody paid me a lot of money to shut up
  • ?
  • ?

7) Describe your definition of a "successful weblog".

I suppose there are lots of factors. Readers, interesting posts, serves a purpose - all of these things are probably good indicators. Running in the black if you're trying to turn a profit, too.

8) Is yours successful by your definition?

I think so. The blog serves my purposes. I have readers. Interesting posts - thats for the readers to decide. Profitable - not by a long shot.

9) What pisses you off most in other weblogs? What pleases you most?

I don't know that anything pisses me off about other weblogs. If I don't like them, I just don't go back. However, there are some things that will make me not go back:

  • Nude photos of women
  • Egotistical or right-wing writing
  • Nude photos of female breasts
  • Ridulous designs, copy that ReAdS LiKe ThIs is not cool either
  • Nude photos of cooches
  • Uninteresting topic matter

What pleases me:

  • Links back to my blog
  • Trackbacks to my blog
  • Seeing a site high in the referrs list of my log reports
  • People sharing their real selves with the world
  • Other folks like me - which makes me realize that maybe I'm not the only crazy one out there

The poor intern

Back in January I wrote about our new intern at the office and how I spit coffee on her (accidentally!) during her first day. The poor girl. In fact, the intern was in a meeting today sitting in the exact same spot where the coffee incident occurred. I snapped a photo with my new toy. Coincidentally, my coffee mug is featured prominently in the foreground of the shot and she's looking to be a little on the defensive with her arms crossed.

Today, she was being quite proactive and emailed some of the team inquiring on where she might look to in order to learn more about computer programming.

In response, one of the developers sent her everything:

Google and its "Public Betas"

There's been speculation that Google uses the term "Public Beta" a little loosly. If you think about it - it's gmail service was unveiled in a beta fashion. No hype, just word of mouth and folks touting the service. About a year later it's one of the most popular free email providers on the 'net and it's changed the way that industry opperates. In short, it's been a huge success.

Then came it's Web Accelerator that I . They've now taken it down, just a couple of days after releasing it to the public. I jumped at it and thought it was a great technology. After using it for a couple of days, however, found it too buggy and had to question what they might be doing with my data.

CNET speculates that perhaps they've released software that is doing something wrong and / or unethical. Google's smart, and everything up until now has been a total success, but the web accelerator has people questioning.

BMW SUVs and serenity in the north

Jim told his story tonight at Hazelden. He did a great job. He's an awesome speaker, getting both laughs and applauses. It's quite an honor to be asked to speak at the treatment center that's pretty much invented the current 28 day treatment program prescribed to most sufferring alcoholics and addicts.

I'd never been up there before, but it's an awesome place. It makes the place I went to treatment look like a Hollywood Video in a stripmall off a two-lane highway in a 4th ring suburb. Hazelden on the otherhand, resembles a prestigous private university campus:

CCaerial.jpg

Check out the photo tour page of the facilities on their website.

It's up in Center City, MN - about an hour north of the Sin Cities, a.k.a., Minneapolis - St. Paul. On the way there you drive through a couple of really small towns that are purley Scandanavian and German. The small town culture up there is cute and endearing, but I can just imagine some of the folks going into treatment, just off the plane from LA or New York, driving through these towns. What must be going through their heads when they see the sign the nicest restaurant in town - Trappers. The only hint of civilization is a Hardeez that you have to drive down a pot-hole infested frontage road that may as well have been gravel.

But once you take that right turn on Pleasant Valley Rd., and another right on the curvacious and hilly private drive, you enter a world of walking paths through dense forests. A half mile into the adventure you come upon the campus - hidden from the rest of the world. It's what I imagine is a great place to come and find yourself.

On the way up there I spoke with my Grandma on the phone. She talked about staying at Hazelden for a week with my Grandfather for part of his treatment program for alcoholism. I have a hard time judging just how much of it she understood, or cares to lead-on to knowing. I think that she's more comfortable playing dumb and not talking about the real reasons he was there. He passed on about 10 years ago now and I believe she prefers to remember him as the perfect husband and father. He was a great grandfather to me, but I can imagine he had room for improvement in the father/husband role, being a practicing alcoholic. Who knows if I should even have these thoughts? Who am I to think and write these things?

My grandfather died of Alcoholism and Tuberculosis. He always appeared happy to me and made me laugh. However all the time I knew him he didn't appear physically well. By the time he finally passed his liver had all but shriveled up and he had 80% of his lungs removed. He required an oxygen machine to live and was barely mobile. I never knew him any different and I loved him anyway. I'm rambling now, but it was nice to think back on the memories I have of him.

Jim and I drove back into town and as I merged from one freeway to another, I noticed the most interesting sight. A BMW X5 SUV was towing a UHaul trailer. It occurred to me that I'd never actually seen one of those luxury brand SUVs ever tow anything. Sure, I've seen Chevy's and Fords towing around boats, trailers, and the like ... but a UHaul truck being toted along by an X5? It was utterly absurd. What would the other X5 drivers think if they saw that?

Microsoft Will Support Gay Rights

I guess the light that shone on Microsoft was too bright - they caved and announced they will support gay rights. It's too bad they flip-flopped around on this issue, but I do think it's great that such a big money corporation is willing to publicly state they support gay rights. Bravo, Microsoft.

Continue reading this entry for an article from the Associated Press.

CEO says Microsoft will support future gay-rights legislation
Elizabeth M. Gillespie, Associated Press
May 7, 2005

SEATTLE -- After being criticized for dropping support for a state gay-rights bill, Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer told employees Friday that management would publicly back such legislation in the future.

Ballmer's commitment came two weeks after activists accused Microsoft of caving to pressure from an evangelical pastor who had threatened to launch a nationwide boycott.

"After looking at the question from all sides, I've concluded that diversity in the workplace is such an important issue for our business that it should be included in our legislative agenda," Ballmer wrote in an e-mail.

In late April, Lorri Jean, CEO of the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center, asked Microsoft to return a civil rights award the group gave the company four years ago. Friday, she said Microsoft should keep the honor.

Ballmer said he would not discuss what prompted Microsoft to take a neutral stance this year on a bill it had actively supported in the past.

Microsoft, one of the first companies to extend domestic-partner benefits to same-sex couples, said its decision came before a meeting with Ken Hutcherson, pastor of a local church who has organized anti-gay-marriage rallies in Seattle and Washington, D.C.

Hutcherson could not be reached for comment Friday. He has said he pressured Microsoft after hearing two employees testify in favor of a bill before the Legislature that would have banned discrimination against gays in housing, employment and insurance.

The bill died by a single vote in the state Senate on April 21.

Liberal bloggers called the company a corporate coward and posted rallying cries for their own boycott of Microsoft products. Gay-rights groups said they'd pressure Microsoft until the company again came out in support of the bill.

Spyware removal

Do yourself a favor and go install Adaware and Free AVG, before a virus or 500 spyware tools install themselves on your computer. Adaware has been a savoir more times than I can count. I've set it up on my parent's computer and run it at least once every two weeks, as unbeknown to them, everytime they visit one of those 'auction' sites or 'message boards' they're usually getting pop-up installing crapware on their machine. On top of being annoying, spyware slows down your computer, sometimes to an almost unusable pace, as they each fight each other for memory and processor resources.

Enough of my ranting. Go download them now. (Mac & Unix users need not bother)

Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith

Ok, I'm a sci-fi geek. I like Star Trek and Star Wars. Yes, I'm gay. Yes, I like these two genres more than I like Liza or Babs. No, you cannot have my gay card.

I can't wait until May 19th - the big day - the day episode III debuts in theatres. Well, actually, I can wait. In fact, I'll probably wait a week or two for the crowds to die down before I go and see it.

I don't know where I developed this interest in sci-fi, but it's always been there. I loved watching the original Star Wars movies over and over again as a child. I couldn't wait for Star Trek: The Next Generation to come up on Fox29 at 10:00pm as a teenager. Even though it was on a UHF channel and my parents didn't subscribe to cable, I watched it - static and all - religously.

And now, episode III is looming over us. The last piece to the puzzle. The storyline that'll put it all together. Over 25 years in the making and tieing together 5 other films. This is the big one.

stchar_hayden.jpg

Could they have found a hotter guy to play Anakin? This boy is pure sex. Okay, so Ian Somerhalder may be a little bit hotter than this one. But, Life as a House was wonderful. His skin is perfect. He's uneasiness when first kissing Natalie Portman onscreen, and his adolecent-like hot-headedness make him real. Others have said he's a terrible actor, citing his amateuristic line recitings, but I'm sticking with him - he's beautiful, and my future husband, so perhaps I'm biased.

stchar_ewan.jpg

The multi-charactered Scot, Ewan McGregor is real no matter who he plays. Not sure if he's top-billing in this film or not, but IMDB does list him first in the credits. This guy has definately made a name for himself. Who else goes from Trainspotting to being Obi Wan? I liked this choice of casting because I like him, but also because the original Obi Wan, Alec Guiness, is from the same island. Ewan plays the inexperienced mentor well, but I hope episode III will show us how the younger version grows to become the older, wiser teacher of earlier films.

stchar_natalie.jpg

After seeing her in Closer and Garden State a few months back, I can't help but be attracted to her. We've seen her grow up on screen. We've seen her be naive, innocent, sexual, happy, and now, fighting and in love. She does everything well. She makes this character so much like Princess Leia, it makes me wonder if all princesses are supposed to be such bruts - I'm certainly not. I am in love with Natalie Portman. I want to be Natalie Portman. Okay, not really, but she's just about as perfect as one could hope for.

stchar_jimmy.jpg

What the fuck was the casting director thinking? Jimmy Smits as a Jedi? We're talking the future of the inter-galactic empire here, not the crack dealer around the corner on the streets of Manhattan. Totally. Un. Believable.

Noguchi architecture?

I heard that Noguchi had designed one of the ING Financial buildings in downtown Minneapolis. I couldn't find a photo of the actual building, but it's somewhere in the neighborhood of Washington Ave & Hennepin Ave. Can anyone confirm this? I only thought of him as an artist / furniture designer, but didn't realize he'd designed a building as well.

Google Web Accelerator

wa_google_logo.gif

This is really freaking cool:

webaccelerator.google.com

Google caches the web already, and they've got amazingly good net connections with amazingly fast web servers. Now you too can harness the POWER OF GOOGLE! By installing this browser plug-in you can access pages through Google's cache instead of from the server the site your browsing is served from.

"But what about pages that update frequently?" you ask. Ahhah - Google's got a solution! It caches the specific parts of the page that don't change, but if part of the page has changed, you'll get the updated version of that piece from the original server.

Even more amazing - it creates it's own index of frequently viewed pages on popular websites. When you visit a popular website, it will start caching the most popular pages on that website onto your computer in the background. That way, in the likely event that you visit some of the most popular pages of the website, you're viewing it from your own hard drive - it doesn't get any faster than that.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, so why in the HECK is Google doing this for FREE? Well, it's so they can monitor browsing habits and continue to enhance their ever-perfect search indexes and sell advertising.

Who cares? Live a little. Let Google see your browsing habits and browse the net at Warp-google.

Works with MSIE 5.5+ and Firefox 1.0+. Mac users, you're SOL.

Anna Chlumsky smiled at me

I was at Spyhouse this morning around 9:00 getting my coffee, settling in with my Sunday newspaper. There were two or three people in line for their morning energy-rush. I was across the room huddled behind the bar. It occurred to me that I'd neglected to grab a napkin on my way past the condiment station, so I got up. I heard the door slam as another patron entered. As I rounded the bar to grab my napkins, I caught a glimpse of the past walking by me.

Could it be her? No ... Sunday morning, in my neighborhood coffee shop in south Minneapolis? Not possible.

I grabbed my napkin and headed back to my nest. The girl had turned around and was heading back my way. She smiled at me. It was a genuine smile, almost flirty, but it just seemed that way because there was so much heart behind it.

I smiled back and sat down, only to watch her leave the way she came - the door slamming behind her. A few flecks of snow coming down on May Day outside.

I don't know if it was really her. I wonder who or what she was looking for that she left so quickly, acknowledging only myself in her short jaunt inside. I haven't seen her on screen for years - that smile alone could make her a star.
